Bringing Accountability and Repair to the Game Industry
Just like the rest of society, the game industry lacks the right tools to address harm. The existing paradigm of punishment, removal, blacklisting, and whisper networks is ineffective at best, and dangerous at worst - and our inability to address this inside the industry impacts the types of games and spaces we create for players. In this talk, Eve will introduce a different paradigm for addressing harm that has the potential to transform the industry for the better.

Social Video in XR
Since the earliest days of AR and VR, video has played a crucial role in how the public understands these technologies. In particular, social video—produced by individual creators rather than corporations—has been pivotal in providing context and insights in the years that the technologies remained prohibitively expensive or otherwise inaccessible. This panel brings together leading experts to discuss how the social video format—from mixed reality playthrough videos to industry news coverage—has played a critical role in the XR community. And now that we’re at the doorstep of adoption outside niche communities, what is its role looking to the future?

How player ownership of rewards or assets earned in a game has the potential to inverts the institutional hierarchy how games operate The power-through-ownership now lives with the decentralized base of gamers rather than only gaming executives. Keynote - Augmented Activism: Preserving History and Culture in the Metaverse
When Aaron Huey set out to do a cover story for NatGeo on public lands in 2017, he had a suspicion it would fail. The story was just too big, with too many important voices and ideas to fit into a traditional format. When he turned to photogrammetry as a solution, he had no idea that this would become a crucial turning point in his career as a storyteller, activist, and founder. The NatGeo piece went on to become a Webby-award winning experience, producing the world’s largest photogrammetry collection of Ancestral Pueblo structures in the process. Since then, he’s shifted from flat to spatial technologies, from the “We the People” campaign he built with Shepard Fairey through Amplifier.org to his latest efforts at Art Machine. This keynote explores his insights learned throughout the past half-decade, taking a look at the unique affordances of Metaverse-driven storytelling formats to deepen cultural heritage efforts, foster inclusion, and provoke new forms of activism.

Keynote - Video Games: A Force for Good
Public perception about video games is at an all-time high, with more and more people recognizing their positive benefits. The pandemic increased awareness of these benefits, as people turned to games to find connection and joy as a means to cope with isolation and other challenges brought on by COVID-19. The emerging view that video games are fast becoming the national pastime stands in stark contrast to earlier stereotypes about the role of video games in society as well as misperceptions about those who play games. Now, the view from Main Street is that video games can do good, have a positive social impact, restore connections among people, and teach us some things about ourselves and the world. Dean Takahashi, lead writer of GamesBeat, will talk about these topics with Stanley Pierre-Louis, President and CEO of the Entertainment Software Association.

Towards a Public Pathway for Careers in Gaming: NYC Youth and Agency
In May 2022, the City University of New York (CCNY) announced a new public pathway to gaming careers to meet the workforce needs of the growing video gaming and related industries in New York City. This presentation explores this new pathway in three ways. First, we will explore highlights from the 2021 study undertaken with area high school-aged youth to inform the development of this project. It will highlight key lessons learned about youth and games while sharing techniques developed to surface examples of youth agency within gaming ecosystems. Second, we will explore what is means to create a new public option offering a bachelor’s degree for youth who want to pursue careers in these industries but lack the means to attend the more expensive private universities offering similar degree programs. Finally, the last third of this symposium will introduce the Weston Game Lab at the University of Chicago and representatives from both programs will explore how both public and private universities can work with local communities to prepare Black and brown youth for a game-oriented career trajectory. The Pathway is a new partnership between New York City’s MoME (Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment) and a team led by CCNY consisting of SAENY (Science and Arts Engagement New York) and UAP (Urban Arts).

Envisioning a New Kind of Healing Space in Games
Sy Raffoul would like to draw attention to an emerging game genre that creates purpose-built healing spaces. Spaces where players can traverse the gap between individual mental health and social justice, and leave with renewed compassion and fortified boundaries. Using the example of Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between, they will look at designing games where openness and vulnerability is balanced with comfort, cooperative conversations shift perspectives, time and productivity are reframed, and tools are modelled that players can use to heal themselves and their communities.

How do the local conditions and histories matter for the creation and consumption of VR experiences? Do certain elements of a place become mistaken as universal? Connecting Humanity: XR’s Accessibility as a Feature
Vantage Point creates experiences that transform the way you think. Morgan, the CEO, discusses Accessibility as a feature of XR, and what this means in both practical and relevant applications within the aspects of designing with the technology. She discusses how XR’s accessibility has helped drive new learning outcomes in education and training, and what accessibility as a feature means in helping learners gain access to various opportunities to learn and practice new skills, and experience what they otherwise never could. Morgan discusses product design considerations for creators to take into account to ensure all learners can access a program, and highlights the fundamental shifts in what this could mean for the future of learning. Morgan proposes how to handle the delicate and powerful scale of “what level of access (in experience), for what learning objectives” when designing curriculum around sensitive topics, and how to maximize the impact of programs, and creating a 1:Many impact.
