Games and play have been a constant throughout history, taking form in a variety of different technologies. However, some gaming technologies naturally lend themselves to reflection, while others simply do not. This talk will explore a tension that is constantly being negotiated with digital educational games: for games that have been designed with educational intent, does design optimized for “flow” preclude the possibility of reflection, and therefore of good learning?
